Bikini Kill’s music has aged gracefully and without a sellout – it has to be said. As a band that played a catalyzing role in the empowerment of women in the punk scene, Bikini Kill saw Bikini Kill interact with their audience, complementing fans’ outfits and taking the time to share their commitment to the fight for abortion rights in the United States Mentioning states, I felt like I was watching the real deal. Having reunited in 2019 after their 1997 breakup, they met the crowd with energy and a clear zest for achievement. An awkward gap between shows was filled with what appeared to be a somewhat improvised “Rifflandia Welcome” speech, killing only part of the hour before Bikini Kill set. As a punk fan, I eagerly awaited the promised back-to-back performances by cult groups Pussy Riot and Bikini Kill.īut without notice, Pussy Riot canceled their set.Ĭlearly, the rug had been swept from under the feet of the punk fans who bought their Rifflandia tickets just to see the two groups. I spent the early evening hours of the second day at the park, Rifflandia’s slang term for its venue, built at the Royal Athletic Park near downtown Victoria. With only one venue open and a relatively modest line-up, day one was a successful launch pad for the days to come.īikini Kill performs at Rifflandia.
